St Matthews Human Resource Centre The St Matthews Human Resource Centre (SMHRC) is a non-profit, charitable organization conducting mental health initiatives in Saint Matthew’s Regional Health Centre, a region of the City of Ottawa, Canada. Established in 2010, it is one of the first three centres in Canada devoted solely to mental illness. In November and December 2018 the SMHRC was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Canadian government to establish an Innovation and Research Centre to support its mission to improve mental health outcomes.

SWOT Analysis

Mission and history Saint Matthews Regional Health Centre was at the beginning developed to address the growing needs for mental health services of the community as a result of changes to services, treatment options and government procurement. It aims to be a unique resource within the services to promote mental health, social inclusion and dignity; to help improve quality of life through community partnership and care integrated with health care; to provide sustainable social change and ultimately improve the world, working towards a “world without mental illness” for all. The project evolved from the Community Mental Health Services and Learning project, launched in 2000, and launched its two programs: the Community Care Program, which aimed to supplement the traditional health services, mainly to create a better quality of life for citizens in need, and the Community Mental Health Program, which promoted peer support for people with mental illness.

In 2009, the team found in the services that their “breath of fresh air” was essential for mentally and physically-challenged youth, which were often neglected to end up in jail, taking them away from home, thereby leading to a break of relationships that were the root cause of mental illness. The new program in Kingston had previously been initiated by the Nova Scotia Housing Authority and the Kingston city council.
